This is a working overview of glutathione disulfide, written for readers who want more than a one-paragraph summary but less than a textbook.

Functionally, glutathione supports redox balance by donating electrons and becoming oxidized. It also serves as a cofactor for enzymes such as glutathione peroxidases and glutathione S-transferases. These enzymes participate in peroxide reduction and in conjugation reactions that help process reactive molecules. Separate from antioxidant roles, glutathione can modify protein cysteines through S-glutathionylation, influencing enzyme activity and signaling. Research continues to examine how these chemical roles translate into whole-organism effects.
Glutathione is a tripeptide composed of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. Its glutamate-cysteine linkage uses the gamma-carboxyl group of glutamate, a feature that resists standard peptidases. The cysteine residue provides a thiol group, which gives the molecule its reducing character. In cells, glutathione is often the most abundant small-molecule thiol, with concentrations varying widely by tissue and compartment. It exists mainly in a reduced form called GSH, while oxidation produces a disulfide-linked dimer called GSSG.
Biosynthesis proceeds in two ATP-dependent steps. First, glutamate-cysteine ligase joins glutamate and cysteine. Second, glutathione synthetase adds glycine to the intermediate. The pathway is regulated by cysteine availability, enzyme expression, and feedback inhibition by glutathione itself. Liver tissue has a particularly high capacity for synthesis and export. Because the molecule is made inside cells, circulating glutathione reflects a balance of release, uptake, and breakdown rather than simple dietary supply.
In living systems, glutathione occurs in millimolar concentrations in many cell types, while extracellular levels are generally much lower. The liver holds a substantial share of the body's total pool, and the molecule participates in reduction, detoxification, and amino acid transport. It also serves as a cofactor for enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase and glutathione S-transferase. Because the cysteine residue supplies a reactive thiol, glutathione can donate electrons and become oxidized. Cells regenerate reduced glutathione through glutathione reductase using NADPH.
Commercial glutathione is produced by microbial fermentation or chemical synthesis, then purified. Reduced and oxidized grades are offered separately, with purity specifications often exceeding 98 percent. The compound appears in foods such as fresh fruits, vegetables, and meats, although cooking and processing can lower amounts. Oral, topical, and inhaled forms are discussed in research and consumer contexts, but absorption and tissue delivery remain active areas of study. Regulatory status varies by country and intended use.

Glutathione supports detoxification by conjugating reactive electrophiles through glutathione S-transferases. The resulting conjugates are processed and exported, often after further metabolism. It also stores cysteine, transports amino acids across membranes through the gamma-glutamyl cycle, and assists in the maturation of iron-sulfur clusters and some prostaglandins. In plants, animals, and many microbes, the molecule appears in similar roles, but concentrations vary enormously between tissues. Liver, kidney, and red blood cells tend to contain high amounts, while blood plasma contains much less.
Glutathione is a small tripeptide built from glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. The peptide bond between glutamate and cysteine uses the gamma-carboxyl group, a linkage that resists ordinary peptidases. Cells make it in two ATP-dependent steps: gamma-glutamylcysteine synthetase joins glutamate and cysteine, then glutathione synthetase adds glycine. The pathway is feedback-inhibited by glutathione itself, so intracellular levels tend to stay within a narrow range. Because cysteine is often limiting, sulfur amino acid supply influences how much glutathione a cell can produce.
Enzymatic recycling assays provide a complementary approach for total glutathione. In these methods, glutathione reductase reduces oxidized glutathione while a thiol-reactive reagent, such as 5,5'-dithiobis(2-nitrobenzoic acid), produces a colored product. The reaction cycles between reduced and oxidized forms, amplifying the signal. Spectrophotometric or fluorometric detection can then estimate concentration. Distinguishing reduced glutathione from glutathione disulfide often requires separate aliquots, masking agents, or chromatographic separation, and the choice affects reported values.
Storage conditions strongly influence glutathione stability. The solid reduced form is commonly kept desiccated at or below minus twenty degrees Celsius, protected from light and moisture. Aqueous solutions are less stable because the thiol group reacts with dissolved oxygen, and oxidation accelerates at neutral or alkaline pH. Acidic solutions and oxygen-free handling can slow degradation, but repeated freeze-thaw cycles should be avoided. Researchers often verify concentration before use, because apparent losses can arise from oxidation or water uptake.
Due to the stabilization of 7s electronic orbitals and destabilization of 6d ones caused by relativistic effects, Cn2+ is likely to have a [Rn]5f146d87s2 electronic configuration, using the 6d orbitals before the 7s one, unlike its homologues. The fact that the 6d electrons participate more readily in chemical bonding means that once copernicium is ionized, it may behave more like a transition metal than its lighter homologues, especially in the possible +4 oxidation state. In aqueous solutions, copernicium may form the +2 and perhaps +4 oxidation states. The diatomic ion Hg2+2, featuring mercury in the +1 oxidation state, is well-known, but the Cn2+2 ion is predicted to be unstable or even non-existent. Copernicium(II) fluoride, CnF2, should be more unstable than the analogous mercury compound, mercury(II) fluoride (HgF2), and may even decompose spontaneously into its constituent elements. As the most electronegative reactive element, fluorine may be the only element able to oxidize copernicium even further to the +4 and even +6 oxidation states in CnF4 and CnF6; the latter may require matrix-isolation conditions to be detected, as in the disputed detection of HgF4. CnF4 should be more stable than CnF2. In polar solvents, copernicium is predicted to preferentially form the CnF−5 and CnF−3 anions rather than the analogous neutral fluorides (CnF4 and CnF2, respectively), although the analogous bromide or iodide ions may be more stable towards hydrolysis in aqueous solution. The anions CnCl2−4 and CnBr2−4 should also be able to exist in aqueous solution.
Doppler ultrasound is less useful as it provides little information about the part of the artery close to the skull base and in the vertebral foramina, and any abnormality detected on ultrasound would still require confirmation with CT or MRI.
=== Recruitment and spending policy === Youth development and scouring for talent abroad is central to Wenger's recruitment policy. He relies on a network of scouts and personal contacts to find and attract talented footballers to play under him. Wenger's strategy is aided by data; for instance, the decision to sign Flamini in 2004 came about as he was looking at statistics to find an understudy to Vieira. To examine the mental state of a young footballer, he uses psychometric tests conducted by psychologist Jacques Crevoisier once every two years. Wenger prides himself on nurturing talent, saying in an interview: "I believe one of the best things about managing people is that we can influence lives in a positive way. That's basically what a manager is about. When I can do that, I am very happy". In his early managerial years, Wenger recognised the potential of football in Africa, which influenced his transfer dealings at Monaco. On the recommendation of Claude Le Roy, he signed Liberian George Weah, who later became the first African to be named FIFA World Player of the Year. Weah, while receiving his award from FIFA president João Havelange and vice-president Lennart Johansson invited Wenger up to the stage, spontaneously giving his medal to the manager, as a token of his appreciation. During his final years at Monaco, Wenger worked with Roger Mendy, a Senegalese defender regarded in 1991 as one of the ten best African footballers by France Football, and Nigerian Victor Ikpeba, a forward who earnt the accolade of African Player of the Year.
=== Spread === The spread of maize cultivation in the Americas was accompanied by the adoption of the nixtamalization process. Traditional and contemporary regional cuisines (including Maya cuisine, Aztec cuisine, and Mexican cuisine) included, and still include, foods based on nixtamalized maize. The process has not substantially declined in usage in the Mesoamerican region, though there has been a decline in North America. Many Native North American tribes, such as the Huron, no longer use the process. In some Mesoamerican and North American regions, dishes are still made from nixtamalized maize prepared by traditional techniques. The Hopi produce sodium carbonate from ashes of various native plants and trees. Some contemporary Maya use calcium salts in the form of ashes of burnt mussel shells or heated limestone. By 900 CE, nixtamalizing maize based foodways began to spread to the American Southeast, serving as the dietary basis for what would come to be called Mississippian culture populations. The most important nixtamalzing dish was hominy, a dish of boiled maize kernels, either ground or whole, that were nixtamalized using woodash or wood ash lye, both made from the ashes of hardwood trees. The continuation of the hominy foodway after European colonization helped reduce cases of pellagra within twentieth century Native populations. In the United States, European settlers rarely adopted the nixtamalization process, considering it unnecessary and not to their taste, though maize became a staple among the poor of the southern states.

=== Laboratory solvent === It is a common solvent for the Grignard reaction in addition to other reactions involving organometallic reagents. These uses exploit its basicity. Diethyl ether is a popular non-polar solvent in liquid-liquid extraction. As an extractant, it is immiscible with and less dense than water. Although immiscible, it has significant solubility in water (6.05 g/(100 ml) at 25 °C) and dissolves 1.5 g/(100 g) (1.0 g/(100 ml)) water at 25 °C.
Condensation reactions likely played major roles in the synthesis of the first biotic molecules including early peptides and nucleic acids. In fact, condensation reactions would be required at multiple steps in RNA oligomerization: the condensation of nucleobases and sugars, nucleoside phosphorylation, and nucleotide polymerization.

Canning involves cooking food, sealing it in sterilized cans or jars, and boiling the containers to kill or weaken any remaining bacteria as a form of sterilization. It was invented by the French confectioner Nicolas Appert. By 1806, this process was used by the French Navy to preserve meat, fruit, vegetables, and even milk. Although Appert had discovered a new way of preservation, it was not understood until 1864 when Louis Pasteur found the relationship between microorganisms, food spoilage, and illness. Foods have varying degrees of natural protection against spoilage and may require that the final step occurs in a pressure cooker. High-acid fruits like strawberries require no preservatives to can and only a short boiling cycle, whereas marginal vegetables such as carrots require longer boiling and the addition of other acidic elements. Low-acid foods, such as vegetables and meats, require pressure canning. Food preserved by canning or bottling is at immediate risk of spoilage once the can or bottle has been opened. Lack of quality control in the canning process may allow ingress of water or micro-organisms. Most such failures are rapidly detected as decomposition within the can cause gas production and the can will swell or burst. However, there have been examples of poor manufacture (underprocessing) and poor hygiene allowing contamination of canned food by the obligate anaerobe Clostridium botulinum, which produces an acute toxin within the food, leading to severe illness or death.
He argued that the two food products are made of the same ingredient and that genetically speaking, soybeans are from China, though the specific variety was never mentioned. Food journalist Andreas Maryoto supported this idea, saying that tempeh might have been accidentally produced as the by-product of the tofu industry in Java in the 17th century, as discarded soybeans caught the spores of a whitish fungus that was found to be edible. In 2025, Zaelani formalized this as the "Okara-Tempe Hypothesis", proposing that tempeh originated from okara (tofu residue) that was naturally fermented before being adapted to whole soybeans. However, tahu was (and is still) made of white soybeans (Glycine max, native to Japan and China), as opposed to the earliest version of tempe dhele that was made of native black soybeans (Glycine soja). Tahu (tofu) made its way to Kediri in the 13th century and was consumed by the Mongolians who arrived in Java. Later, it was popular only among the rich (the complex production process and imported white soybeans led to its high price). Around the 17th or 19th century, tahu became available to everyone. Tempeh later began to be made with white soybeans, leading to the decreased use of its native black variety. Black soybeans have been replaced by other commodity plants since. The original version of tempe dhele has been forgotten as tahu has become the common people's food, and dependence on imported white soybeans grows.

Glutathione is a sulfur-containing tripeptide made from glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. It is found in most cells and participates in redox balance and detoxification reactions.
No. It is a tripeptide assembled from three amino acids. The term amino acid applies to the individual building blocks, not to the assembled molecule.
It is present in many tissues, with especially high amounts in liver. Intracellular concentrations are generally much higher than those found in blood plasma.
It is a tripeptide rather than a full protein. Proteins generally contain many amino acids joined by alpha-peptide bonds, while glutathione has three residues and an unusual gamma-glutamyl linkage. That structure affects how enzymes recognize and break it down.
