Glutathione is a small sulfur-containing peptide built from glutamic acid, cysteine, and glycine. Its distinctive feature is a gamma-glutamyl bond between glutamate's side-chain carboxyl group and cysteine's amino group. This linkage resists ordinary peptidases and helps the molecule remain stable inside cells. The reduced thiol form, often abbreviated GSH, is the dominant intracellular species. The oxidized disulfide dimer, GSSG, forms when two reduced molecules link through their cysteine sulfur atoms. The balance between these forms is a common redox indicator.
In living systems, glutathione occurs in millimolar concentrations in many cell types, while extracellular levels are generally much lower. The liver holds a substantial share of the body's total pool, and the molecule participates in reduction, detoxification, and amino acid transport. It also serves as a cofactor for enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase and glutathione S-transferase. Because the cysteine residue supplies a reactive thiol, glutathione can donate electrons and become oxidized. Cells regenerate reduced glutathione through glutathione reductase using NADPH.
Enzymatic recycling assays provide a complementary approach for total glutathione. In these methods, glutathione reductase reduces oxidized glutathione while a thiol-reactive reagent, such as 5,5'-dithiobis(2-nitrobenzoic acid), produces a colored product. The reaction cycles between reduced and oxidized forms, amplifying the signal. Spectrophotometric or fluorometric detection can then estimate concentration. Distinguishing reduced glutathione from glutathione disulfide often requires separate aliquots, masking agents, or chromatographic separation, and the choice affects reported values.
Storage conditions strongly influence glutathione stability. The solid reduced form is commonly kept desiccated at or below minus twenty degrees Celsius, protected from light and moisture. Aqueous solutions are less stable because the thiol group reacts with dissolved oxygen, and oxidation accelerates at neutral or alkaline pH. Acidic solutions and oxygen-free handling can slow degradation, but repeated freeze-thaw cycles should be avoided. Researchers often verify concentration before use, because apparent losses can arise from oxidation or water uptake.
Measuring glutathione in biological samples requires attention to oxidation and matrix effects. High-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet or fluorescence detection can separate reduced and oxidized forms after derivatization. Liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry offers higher specificity and can quantify glutathione alongside related thiols. Because glutathione can oxidize during sample handling, many protocols use rapid acidification with metaphosphoric acid or sulfosalicylic acid. Internal standards help correct for losses during extraction and analysis.

Colin Stagg has been through a version of justice, albeit truncated, and he has been found not guilty. But I wonder whether he can actually say hand on heart that he believes people will meet him in the street and believe that. I do not believe the system served anybody that particular day. After Stagg's acquittal, Pedder took early retirement from the police. He later faced corruption charges, but the case was thrown out by the judge in a pre-trial hearing on the grounds of insufficient evidence.
=== Use as forage === In former times, Jerusalem artichoke was used as forage for domesticated cattle, horses, and pigs. The plant has valuable nutrient contents and various bioactive compounds, and so is used today as an animal feed source or for the health of several animal species. Pigs, for example, can eat the tuber either dried or directly from the ground or the green plant biomass (stalks and leaves) from the pasture. Washed Jerusalem artichoke tubers can be fed to many animals, and silage produced from the harvested stalks and leaves. The silage has high nutrient values and satisfactory digestion performance for ruminants. Its high inulin content beneficially affects the rumen metabolism and microflora. However, cutting the tops to produce silage greatly reduces the harvest of the tubers. There are also many other Jerusalem artichoke products on the market, such as supplementary feed for horses, dogs, and small animals.
==== Chloride ==== Intracellular chloride partially inhibits the contraction of muscles. Namely, it prevents muscles from contracting due to "false alarms", small stimuli which may cause them to contract (akin to myoclonus).

== Description == Leaves are aromatic, simple and lanceolate, obovate-elliptic or elliptic, size of 5–15 cm × 2–5 cm, coriaceous to thickly coriaceous. The leaves are 5–15 cm × 1.5–5 cm, apex acute, lower side pubescent. Flowers are solitary, bisexual, pink to dark red, axillary or subterminal. The perianth has 7–12 lobes, arranged spirally; 11–20 stamens, arranged spirally, with short, thick filaments; and usually 8 carpels, free, arranged in a single whorl. Flower peduncle size is 1.5–4 cm, tepals number range from seven to twelve, and are broadly elliptic to broadly ovate, anthers size is 1–1.5 mm, pollen grains trisyncolpate. The fruit is a capsule-like follicetum, star-shaped, reddish-brown, consisting of six to eight follicles arranged in a whorl. Each follicle is boat-shaped, 1–2 cm long, rough and rigid, color reddish-brown, with 1 seed, opening along the ventral edge when ripe. carpels size of 10 mm long, boat-shaped; they are hard and wrinkled, containing one seed. Seeds are brown, compressed ovoid, smooth, shiny and brittle with approximate size of 8–9 mm × 6 mm. Differences with similar taxa: Illicium anisatum had smaller fruits that does not form a regular star due to the abortion of some carpels. Also fruit follicles are not swollen in the middle and had a more pointed apex. Also usually had more than 8 follicles and the fruit has weaker odour. The seeds in Illicium anisatum are flat or almost spherical.
The Hidden - Puts one player (called The Hidden) as an invisible genetically modified human against a team of SWAT-like operatives called the Infinitum Research Intercept Squad, (IRIS) with regular human attributes but a selection of weapons to choose. The IRIS team's objective is to hunt down the Hidden, while the Hidden attempts to stalk and kill the IRIS team without being detected. Hidden: Source won Mod DB's "Fourth Place, Mod of the Year" in 2006, "Editors' Choice for Ambience" in 2006, and "Editors' Choice for Multiplayer" in 2005. Insurgency: Modern Infantry Combat - Is a total conversion mod for Valve's Source engine. Insurgency is a multiplayer, tactical first person shooter, and implements elements of realism, in an attempt to increase player immersion and promote teamwork. The game is primarily set in the Iraq war, however some maps are set in Afghanistan, and future updates are planned to expand the setting into a hypothetical conflict in Kosovo and other theatres. Insurgency received the Player's Choice 2007 "Mod of the Year" award from ModDB, as well as the "Best Source Mod of 2007" Gold Award from Steamfriends. Iron Grip: The Oppression - A first-person shooter/real-time strategy hybrid set within the fictional Iron Grip universe in a predominantly urban setting. The game pits two separate factions against each other: the Rahmos and the Resistance. Playing as the Rahmos gives at least one player control of an array of AI-controlled NPCs in a top-down real-time strategy perspective.
Carboxypeptidase E functions in the production of nearly all neuropeptides and peptide hormones. The enzyme acts as an exopeptidase to activate neuropeptides. It does that by cleaving off basic C-terminal amino acids, producing the active form of the peptide. Products of carboxypeptidase E include insulin, the enkephalins, vasopressin, oxytocin, and most other neuroendocrine peptide hormones and neuropeptides. It has been proposed that membrane-associated carboxypeptidase E acts as a sorting signal for regulated secretory proteins in the trans-Golgi network of the pituitary and in secretory granules; regulated secretory proteins are mostly hormones and neuropeptides. However, this role for carboxypeptidase E remains controversial, and evidence shows that this enzyme is not necessary for the sorting of regulated secretory proteins.

It is a tripeptide rather than a full protein. Proteins generally contain many amino acids joined by alpha-peptide bonds, while glutathione has three residues and an unusual gamma-glutamyl linkage. That structure affects how enzymes recognize and break it down.
GSH is the reduced form with a free thiol group. GSSG is the oxidized disulfide dimer formed when two GSH molecules react. The GSH-to-GSSG ratio is used in research as one indicator of cellular redox conditions.
Yes, it is present in many animal and plant tissues, including meats, some vegetables, and fruits. Heat, storage, and processing can reduce its content, so measured amounts vary widely.
Chromatographic methods can separate the two forms before detection. Enzymatic assays often measure total glutathione first and then use a separate procedure to estimate the oxidized fraction. The difference between total and oxidized amounts provides an indirect estimate of the reduced form.
